Technology and Web
I am a huge gadget and tech fan. So this page is just to show what gadgets and tech I use. I also am very interested in all things web. Development, design and other topics really!
Hardware
Computers
My main computing device is an Apple iMac 27" i7. I purchased this around June/July 2011 a little over a month after I started working at CBJ Digital. With the iMac I switch between an Apple Magic Mouse and an Apple Magic Trackpad for controlling purposes.
I back this machine up onto a Western Digital 1Tb external drive using the fantastic Time Machine software built into Mac OSX. I also have a Maxtor 300Gb external drive to store films and TV shows.
I also use an Apple MacBook Pro 13" Core 2 Duo 2010 model for work and also whilst i'm out and about.
Phones
My current smartphone device is an Apple iPhone 4S 64Gb. I use this for music/videos, gaming, browsing and keeping up to date with news.
Other portable devices
My primary photographic device is a Panasonic Lumix TZ7. It's a nice small and compact point and shoot. I find this perfect for my needs currently.
I also have a Nintendo DS console. This is the original and first generation DS device. Thoroughly enjoyed playing many a game using this. Doesn't get used an awful lot but I keep coming back to it whenever I decide I want to revisit some old DS games.
Earlier this year I got an Apple iPad (3rd generation). The iPad was a device I have wanted since the first one was announced 3 years ago but back then I could never come up with a good enough reason for purchasing one but over these years, a lot of reasons have come to light and am glad to finally get one to use mainly for email, eBook reading, website testing, keeping up with RSS feeds and game playing. A very useful gadget to have around.
Home technology
I own a Nintendo Wii console in white and this runs through to a Toshiba Regza 24" television. Also connected to the television is a Pioneer DVR565HS-X DVR. This used to be my primary recording TV method but is now only used for viewing DVD's. For recording I now use a Humax HDR Fox T2 Freeview HD 500Gb box. This is a fantastic device I would highly recommend to others. It's user interface is clean and it's pretty speedy too.
Software
Computers
The iMac is currently running OSX 10.7.3 Lion. I also have a bootcamp partition running Windows 7 Professional. This is mainly used for playing games and testing websites.
As I do a lot of web development I do have quite a few web browsers installed for testing but generally on a daily basis use Google Chrome. All my custom settings are synced over Chrome sync to my laptop. I have a number of extensions. Last Pass securely stores and synchronises my user accounts for websites and web applications between different browsers and machines. Very useful. I also use XMarks to store bookmarks/favourites once again between other browsers and machines. XMarks syncs my bookmarks to Safari which then forwards those via Apple's iCloud to my iPhone.
Talking of iCloud, I have pretty much moved over to using iCloud to store and sync all my contacts and calendars. These sync between Address Book and iCal on Mac to iCloud and then down to Calendar and Contacts on my iPhone.
My laptop is currently running OSX 10.7.3 Lion
Phones
My iPhone is running iOS 5.1 and I have a large number of apps. Some apps I highly recommend are:
- Reeder (iPhone) | Reeder (iPad)
- Tweetbot (iPhone) | Tweetbot (iPad)
- Evernote
- Foursquare (iPhone)
- Calvetica
Other portable devices
The iPad is running iOS 5.1.
Web Development
I started dabbling in developing in web technologies when I was around 13 years of age. Since then I have kept on developing, learning and expanding my knowledge of new techniques and languages.
The areas I have focused on include:
- HTML 5
- CSS 3
- Javascript (including jQuery)
- Ruby on Rails
- PHP
